Who is Larry Page?

Larry Page is one of the two masterminds behind the creation of the world renowned search engine 'Google Inc'.  American, Page set about producing this website with the help and ideas of Sergey Brin, together they came up with the concept of retrieving information from various websites that relate to the given search criteria.

Born in March, 1973, to Dr. Carl Victor Page, a professor of computer science and artificial intelligence and mother Gloria Page a computer programming teacher, both of Michigan State University, the young Larry was sure to be influenced by their intense and complex careers.  Growing up in a world full of computers and programming, Page was sure to go on to achieve big success in his own career.

Success and determination clearly run in the family, as Larry's brother Carl Victor Page, Jr. can vouch for.  Himself a co-founder of the online 'eGroups', it later sold to 'yahoo' giants for an estimated half a billion dollars.

After graduating form East Lansing High School, Michagan, Page went on to complete with honors a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering from the University of Michigan, followed by a Masters degree in Computer Science from Standford University.

While studing for his Ph.D in computer science in Standford University, Page went in search of a subject matter to base his final disseration on.  After much deliberation and discussion with his supervisor, Terry Winograd, Page decided to persue the idea of understanding the mathematic properties behind the up and coming World Wide Web and how each link to a relative website was created on a graph like structure.  This was to be the beginning of the thought process behind the 'Google' website which on a daily basis racks up millions of 'hits', while people search for an answer to the queries or problems.

Teaming up with fellow Ph.d student and close friend, Sergey Brin, they set about creating the software system.  Initially, the site was to be called 'BackRub', but in August 1996 the first version of 'Google' was developed and made readily available on the Standford University website.  They realised that the search engine would list results in order of popularity and how many times they were viewed, and more times than not these pages would also be deemed to be the most useful.

Here is a link to the Google 10 year TIMELINE

From founding the search engine Google, Larry and his co founder Sergey Brin have become two of the richest people in America.  They created Google search engine when the pair were studying for PhD.s in computer science at Stanford University, USA.  With Google being such a success Larry and his business partner Sergey now rank 5th in the 400 richest Americans, each worth an estimated 18.5 dollars.

Google started in 1998 and grew rapidly every year, Page and Brin started the search engine with their own funds and help from families and friends.  With the growth of the website growing at the rate of 20% per month they ran out of funds and then had to seek private investments through Stanford University to fund the site.

Google became profitable after 2 years of hard work when they started to allow advertising to be displayed along with the search engine results.

Page and Brin

Both Page and Brin are known to be great geniuses with computers and the founders of the world's most popular and greatest internet search engine, Google.  The two men first met at Stanford University in the mid-90s, where they were both studing computer science.  It is believed that they did not immediately get along with one another but became friends whilst developing a new internet search engine from their college dormitory. The created a software system whereby the search engine listed results according to the popularity of the pages. It was initially called BackRub.  After they dropped out of college, they changed the search engine's name to what is known to us today as Google.  On September 7th 1998, Google had it's official launch on the world wide web with the aid of family and friends investing up to $1m.  Today, it remains as one of the most popular search engine's on the net.

Co-founders Larry Page, president of Products, and Sergey Brin, president of Technology, brought Google to life in September 1998. Since then, the company has grown to more than 10,000 employees worldwide, with a management team that represents some of the most experienced technology professionals in the industry. Eric Schmidt joined Google as chairman and chief executive officer in 2001.

Larry Page was Google's founding CEO and grew the company to more than 200 employees and profitability before moving into his role as president of products in April 2001. He continues to share responsibility for Google's day-to-day operations with Eric Schmidt and Sergey Brin.

The son of Michigan State University computer science professor Dr. Carl Victor Page, Larry's love of computers began at age six. While following in his father's footsteps in academics, he became an honors graduate from the University of Michigan, where he earned a bachelor's degree in engineering, with a concentration on computer engineering. During his time in Ann Arbor, Larry built an inkjet printer out of Lego™ bricks.

While in the Ph.D. program in computer science at Stanford University, Larry met Sergey Brin, and together they developed and ran Google, which began operating in 1998. Larry went on leave from Stanford after earning his master's degree.

In 2002, Larry was named a World Economic Forum Global Leader for Tomorrow. He is a member of the National Advisory Committee (NAC) of the University of Michigan College of Engineering, and together with co-founder Sergey Brin, Larry was honored with the Marconi Prize in 2004. He is a trustee on the board of the X PRIZE, and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2004.

Larry Page attended a Montessori school in Stanford University, for his dissertation theme he considered the mathematical properties of the World Wide Web. He understood its link structure as a huge graph.    He focused on finding out which WebPages link to a given page, this research project was nicknamed “Backrub” & he was soon joined by Sergey Brinn, student and close friend who he met in summer 1995.

Brinn and Page developed the page rank algorithm to convert the data gathered by Backrubs WebCrawler, He realised this could be used to build a search engine far superior to any existing on at the time.  It was in August 1996 that the initial version of Google was made available.
